Romance was the theme of last weekend as we congratulated our loved ones on their new nuptials while Sangheon and I had a celebration of our own as we reached our 1 year anniversary as a couple. In order to be with our friends and loved ones we hopped on a flight to Cincinnati, Ohio. The whole time I was thinking about the song from the movie ‘Babes in Toyland.’
Do you remember that old 1980s movie with Drew Barrymore?
Cincinnati is a beautiful city with a lovely river walk and cobblestone streets. For our first night, my boyfriend made a reservation at Mitchell’s Fish Market to celebrate our anniversary. The seafood was so fresh and delicious. For our appetizer we ordered the raw oysters and this was my first time trying them raw since in Korea I usually always ate them after they were steamed. I was a little nervous if I’d like them or not, but they were actually quite tasty!
I also ordered one of my favorite dishes, lobster bisque. The lobster bisque down south has more of a Cajun twist to it so it was refreshing to have something a little bit more traditional. For our main courses I got the Atlantic cod which came with multiple sides while Sangheon got the crab stuffed cod. Needless to say it came with so much food that we ended up having to share our dishes.
The atmosphere was very romantic as we watched the sunset by the river and from beyond the skyscrapers. There was even a sweet old couple that started dancing as the band played music next door. After dinner we walked along the river walk and enjoyed the beautiful views together. Overall I’d say it was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary.
The next morning we had to get up quite early to feed ourselves before we ran off to the wedding venue for Ryan and Ewelina’s wedding. This was Sangheon’s first time experiencing a traditional American wedding so I gave him a heads up to expect it to last all day and well into the evening. We had a lot of fun throughout the day though as we watched loved ones get married, partied on the party bus, and danced the night away at the reception. Despite my warnings about the length of an American wedding my boyfriend underestimated my meaning because he kept making shocked noises. Needless to say he immediately passed out when we got back to our AirBnb! It was a beautiful wedding though and we hope the bride and groom will have an amazing life together!
On Sunday we stopped to eat at White Castle since everyone kept telling me I had to try their food! I thought the little burgers were cute and it made me think of Harold and Kumar. Although after all of the food we consumed that weekend I knew I was going to have to do some lengthy workouts and clean eating to get back to good habits. Later the afternoon we got on another plane to head back to Houston. Our trip to Cincinnati was a busy one but we had a great time. I hope to head back to visit Ohio again some day.
Sorry for the delay in this blog post. We were simply exhausted after going from a busy weekend to jumping into an equally busy work week! The fall semester is approaching quickly so as a Faculty Assistant I am responsible for course prep work. I am still the newbie at work so it’s important for me to give it my all. Now that I am getting more accustomed to the work I am hoping I won’t be quite so sleepy in the evenings and can focus on my blog during my non-working hours. More to come!
